What is the Bioflor test?

Bioflor is a quantitative PCR test that assesses the balance of the vaginal microflora. It shows not only which bacteria are present, but also what share of the total bacterial count they represent. A standard swab usually only confirms that a bacterium is present. Bioflor shows the ratio between the protective flora and the bacteria that suppress it, so it is clear whether the flora is healthy or disrupted.

What does the Bioflor vaginal microflora analysis show?

Group Bacteria tested Role in the flora
Total bacterial mass all bacteria in the sample baseline for calculating the share of each group
Lactobacilli Lactobacillus spp. “good” bacteria that keep the vaginal environment healthy
Bacterial vaginosis bacteria Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae, Prevotella spp., Leptotrichia amnionii associated with bacterial vaginosis
Aerobic vaginitis bacteria Streptococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp. associated with aerobic vaginitis

Results are expressed as the percentage share of lactobacilli and of each bacterial group in the total flora. When the share of lactobacilli drops, the report shows which group has taken their place: bacterial vaginosis bacteria or aerobic vaginitis bacteria.

When is the Bioflor test recommended?

  • increased or unpleasant discharge, itching, burning or an unpleasant odour;
  • recurrent infections;
  • to assess whether treatment has worked;
  • before planning a pregnancy, IVF or gynaecological procedures.

If you are preparing for pregnancy, the flora can be checked at the same time as your hormonal status through the women’s reproductive panel.

Bioflor or Bioflor + STD12 – which test should you choose?

Both tests are done from the same vaginal-cervical swab and give the same quantitative picture of the flora. The difference is 12 sexually transmitted and urogenital pathogens, from chlamydia and gonorrhoea to HPV 16 and 18, which the Bioflor + STD12 urogenital panel detects alongside the flora.

How are the results interpreted?

Results are interpreted by a gynaecologist, together with your symptoms and clinical examination. The percentage format makes it possible to compare the result with a post-treatment report and check whether the share of lactobacilli has recovered. According to the CDC guidelines on bacterial vaginosis, this condition is the most common cause of increased vaginal discharge in women of reproductive age.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Bioflor test cost?

The Bioflor test at IntroLab laboratory costs 16,000 RSD.

How long does it take to get Bioflor results?

Results are ready 72 hours after the vaginal-cervical swab is taken.

Which vaginal flora test should I do?

The choice depends on your symptoms and on what your gynaecologist wants to check. Bioflor is a good choice for assessing flora balance and for follow-up after treatment of bacterial vaginosis or aerobic vaginitis. When chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas and herpes also need to be checked alongside the flora, IntroLab laboratory offers Bioflor + STD12 for 19,000 RSD.

Why do a Bioflor test if a standard vaginal swab is normal?

A standard vaginal swab shows bacteria that grow in culture, but does not measure what share of the flora each group makes up. Bioflor uses PCR to also detect bacteria that are difficult to culture, such as Atopobium vaginae, and shows the ratio of lactobacilli to other bacteria. That is why it is done when symptoms are present but a standard result does not explain them.

Can the swab be taken during menstruation?

No. The swab for the Bioflor test is taken outside of menstruation.

Does Bioflor detect chlamydia, HPV or candida?

No. Bioflor assesses the bacterial flora. Chlamydia, HPV 16 and 18, candida and other pathogens are tested in the Bioflor + STD12 urogenital panel.

Does Bioflor detect ureaplasma and mycoplasma?

No. Bioflor does not cover Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma species. At IntroLab laboratory they are tested in the Bioflor + STD12 urogenital panel or as individual tests.
