Uric Acid
The uric acid blood test is a diagnostic tool used to identify and monitor various kidney and metabolic disorders. This test is often performed to diagnose and monitor the effectiveness of treatment in cases such as gout, kidney diseases, metabolic syndrome, and other related conditions. IntroLab, a specialized medical laboratory in Vračar, can conduct this test to provide relevant information for the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
When is this test useful?
This test is used in the diagnosis and treatment of various kidney and metabolic disorders, such as:
- Renal insufficiency
- Gout
- Leukemia
- Psoriasis
- Starvation or other conditions leading to weight loss
It can also be used to monitor patients undergoing cytotoxic therapy.
What do low and high Uric Acid levels in the blood indicate?
Low uric acid levels, known as hypouricemia, can occur due to decreased production of uric acid in certain hereditary conditions, AIDS, certain malignant diseases, Fanconi syndrome, and diabetes mellitus.
On the other hand, high levels in the blood, known as hyperuricemia, can be classified as primary or secondary. Primary hyperuricemia most commonly occurs as an idiopathic or familial condition where the excretion of uric acid through the tubules is reduced. Secondary hyperuricemia can be associated with increased purine intake and certain conditions such as:
- Renal insufficiency
- Hemolytic disease
- Myeloproliferative disease
- Psoriasis
- Type I glycogen storage disease
- Polycythemia vera
- Excessive alcohol intake
- Lead poisoning
- Chemotherapy
- Diet

Frequently asked questions
Do you need to fast for a uric acid blood test?
Yes. Blood for the uric acid test at IntroLab laboratory is drawn in the morning, on an empty stomach, after 8–12 hours without food. Fasting is important because purine-rich food and alcohol affect uric acid levels in the blood. Uric acid is measured from serum (venous blood), and the result is ready in 4h, so you usually get it the same day.
How much does a uric acid blood test cost?
The uric acid blood test at IntroLab laboratory costs 190 RSD, and the result is ready in 4h. Doctors most often request it when gout is suspected, in kidney failure and metabolic syndrome, and to monitor how well treatment of these conditions works. Uric acid is also monitored in patients receiving cytotoxic therapy, that is, chemotherapy, because it can raise uric acid levels.
Is uric acid in blood the same as uric acid in urine?
No, these are two separate tests. Uric acid in blood is measured from serum, in the morning on an empty stomach, and shows how much uric acid is in the blood. Uric acid in urine is measured from a urine sample and shows how much uric acid the kidneys excrete. At IntroLab laboratory, both tests cost 190 RSD each, with the result ready in 4h. Your doctor decides whether you need one or both.
Is urea the same as uric acid?
No. Urea and uric acid are different substances, although both are excreted by the kidneys and are often measured together. Uric acid is formed from the breakdown of purines, which the body gets from its own cells and from food, while urea is the end product of protein breakdown. That is why high uric acid is linked to gout, while urea is used mainly to assess kidney function. At IntroLab laboratory, uric acid is measured from venous blood, on an empty stomach.
