What is latex?
Latex, or natural rubber, is a polymer derived from the fluid of several tree species, most commonly from the Hevea brasiliensis tree. This fluid is collected through a process called “tapping” and then processed to produce the solid material known as latex or natural rubber. Latex is known for its elasticity, durability, and water resistance, making it widely used across various industries.
Natural latex is commonly used to manufacture products like gloves, balloons, condoms, catheters, and many medical devices. It is also used in the tire industry, footwear production, and other applications.
However, some people may develop allergic reactions to the proteins found in natural latex.
When is the latex K82 test performed and why?
The latex K82 test is recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms of a latex allergy, such as:
- redness
- itching
- swelling of the skin
It is also advised for people frequently exposed to latex, like healthcare workers, to assess their immune response to latex.
