What is Malaria?
Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasitic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium. The disease is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female mosquitoes from the genus Anopheles. There are five species of Plasmodium that can cause malaria in humans:
- Plasmodium falciparum
- Plasmodium malariae
- Plasmodium ovale
- Plasmodium vivax
- Plasmodium knowlesi
Plasmodium falciparum is the most lethal species and is responsible for the majority of malaria-related deaths.
When a person is bitten by an infected mosquito, the parasites enter the bloodstream and travel to the liver, where they reproduce. They then return to the bloodstream and begin infecting red blood cells.
Symptoms can vary but often include:
- High fever
- Chills
- Sweating
- Headache
- Nausea
- Muscle pain
- Fatigue
When is this test necessary?
Malaria testing is recommended if you are experiencing symptoms and have a history of travel to areas where malaria is prevalent. It is also advisable for individuals who live or work in such areas, as well as those who have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with malaria.
How are the results interpreted?
Malaria test results are interpreted by detecting the presence of Plasmodium parasites in the blood sample. A positive result indicates that the parasite is present, meaning the person is infected. A negative result suggests the absence of the parasite, but in some cases, the test may need to be repeated after a few days to confirm that the person is truly free from infection.
How is the test conducted?
Malaria testing is performed by examining a blood sample under a microscope. The blood sample is taken from a vein in the arm using a sterile needle.

Frequently asked questions
When should I get a malaria test and how much does it cost?
A malaria test is recommended when symptoms such as high fever, chills, sweating, headache, nausea, muscle pain and fatigue appear after a stay in areas where malaria is common. At IntroLab laboratory, the malaria test costs 2,400 RSD, and the result is ready in 1 day. Blood is drawn from a vein, and the sample is examined under a microscope to detect Plasmodium parasites.
How is malaria transmitted, and can it spread from person to person?
Malaria is transmitted by the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito, which introduces the Plasmodium parasite into the blood. It does not spread from person to person through ordinary contact, but in rare cases it can be transmitted through a blood transfusion or from mother to baby. If you have been in an area where malaria is common and have a fever, the malaria test at IntroLab laboratory shows whether parasites are present in your blood.
