The Von Willebrand factor activity test is used to diagnose Von Willebrand disease, the most common hereditary bleeding disorder. This condition occurs due to a deficiency or reduced function of the Von Willebrand factor, which is crucial for normal blood clotting. Von Willebrand factor is essential for the proper binding and stabilization of factor VIII, which is responsible for forming blood clots. This test, along with other bleeding time tests, is available at IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade.

What is Von Willebrand disease?

Von Willebrand Disease affects both men and women equally, with symptoms often appearing in early childhood. The primary symptom is prolonged or excessive bleeding, which can include frequent nosebleeds, gum bleeding, or extended menstrual bleeding in women.

A Von Willebrand factor activity test provides a quantitative assessment of the functionality of this factor in the patient’s blood. Based on the results, a diagnosis of Von Willebrand Disease can be made. Appropriate treatment for managing bleeding can then be determined. This analysis should be conducted in collaboration with a medical professional. They will recommend the appropriate therapy based on the test results and clinical evaluation.

When is Von Willebrand Factor Activity test indicated?

Testing for Von Willebrand factor (vWF) levels is recommended if there is a positive family history. Additionally, if a patient has a tendency to bruise easily, experiences prolonged bleeding from minor cuts, or has heavy menstrual bleeding, testing for vWF should be considered. The initial test to confirm the disease is the ristocetin cofactor activity test (vWF). This test involves administering the antibiotic ristocetin to the patient, which stimulates and activates vWF to agglutinate platelets, thereby evaluating the functionality of the vWF factor.
