Urine Culture
The urine culture test, performed by the renowned Belgrade laboratory IntroLab, is an analytical method used to cultivate a urine sample in order to identify microorganisms that may be causing urinary tract infections. This procedure is carried out on nutrient media, and results are available within 1–3 days.
Under normal conditions, urine is sterile. It provides an unfavorable environment for microbial growth due to its acidity and varying concentrations of compounds. However, despite these unfavorable conditions, bacteria can sometimes colonize the urine. In such cases, a detailed microbiological analysis of the urine—namely, a urine culture—is necessary. Fortunately, the urine culture cost at our facility is affordable, so you don’t have to wait for your symptoms to worsen before getting tested.
When is a urine culture test indicated?
A urine culture is recommended in the following situations:
- In cases of frequent urination, burning during urination, a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying, lower back pain, and elevated body temperature
- If the urine has a strong or unpleasant odor
- In children, a high fever combined with symptoms of infection is considered a red flag
A urinary tract infection involves the multiplication of bacteria within the organs of the urinary system. These infections most commonly affect the bladder and urinary tract but can also occur in the kidneys. To prevent further complications, a urine culture should be performed as early as possible to allow for timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Interpreting the results
Interpreting urine culture results involves analyzing the presence of bacteria in the urine sample. Below are some possible outcomes and their meanings:
- Negative urine culture: No bacterial growth is detected in the urine sample, indicating the absence of a bacterial urinary tract infection.
- Positive urine culture: If bacteria are identified, this indicates the presence of a bacterial infection in the urinary tract. In this case, our staff will also perform an antibiotic sensitivity test (antibiogram) to determine which antibiotics are effective against the identified bacteria.
- Contaminated urine culture: Occasionally, the urine sample may be contaminated with external bacteria during collection or may not be delivered within the required timeframe. In such cases, the test should be repeated to obtain accurate results.
Urine culture results should not be interpreted in isolation or on your own. The only proper way to interpret them is with the help of a physician, taking into account the patient’s clinical condition and symptoms.

- Preparation
- The best sample for analysis is fresh, first morning urine, collected in a sterile container. Before collecting the sample, wash the external genital area with water, without disinfectants; let the first stream go into the toilet and collect the midstream urine in the container. The minimum amount of urine required for analysis is 10–15 ml. The sample should be delivered to the laboratory within one hour.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a urine culture result take 1–3 days?
A urine culture result at IntroLab laboratory is ready in 1–3 days, because the urine sample is plated on nutrient media and must be incubated so that bacteria can grow and be identified. If bacteria are found in the urine, an antibiogram is also performed to show which antibiotics work against the cause of the infection. When a result is needed sooner, a rapid urine culture is available, with results in 24 hours.
How is a rapid urine culture different from a standard urine culture?
The main difference is the time to result. In a standard urine culture, bacteria must grow on a medium, so the result at IntroLab laboratory is ready in 1–3 days, and the urine culture costs 1,200 RSD. A rapid urine culture uses technology that detects bacteria within a few hours, costs 1,100 RSD, and the result is ready in 24 hours. For both tests, the sample is fresh first morning urine in a sterile container, delivered to the laboratory within one hour.
What does “no pathogenic bacteria isolated” or “normal flora” mean?
The result “no pathogenic bacteria isolated” means that no bacterium that commonly causes urinary tract infections grew in the urine culture. “Normal flora” refers to bacteria that normally live on the skin and mucous membranes of the external genitals and enter the sample during urination, so they are not considered the cause of infection. If the sample is contaminated or not delivered on time, the urine culture should be repeated. A result from IntroLab laboratory is interpreted by a doctor, together with symptoms.
Is an antibiogram done with a urine culture?
Yes, when the urine culture is positive. If bacteria are identified in the urine sample, IntroLab laboratory also performs an antibiogram, which shows which antibiotics the isolated bacterium is sensitive to and which it is resistant to. The doctor chooses therapy based on the antibiogram. With a negative urine culture, no antibiogram is done, because no causative agent has been isolated.
