The UIBC test measures the amount of iron that can bind to the protein transferrin but is currently unbound. It is a key indicator of the body’s iron metabolism. This test indirectly assesses the amount of transferrin in the blood, which is useful for diagnosing various conditions. At IntroLab in Belgrade, this test is available along with other blood tests related to anemia.

What is UIBC and how is it related to TIBC?

UIBC (Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity) and TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity) are biochemical tests used to evaluate the body’s iron metabolism. These tests should always be performed alongside other indicators of iron metabolism, such as hemoglobin, iron, and ferritin.

Who should have a UIBC test?

This test may be recommended for various individuals, including:

  • Patients with symptoms of anemia: Symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, pallor, or a rapid heartbeat.
  • Patients with symptoms of iron overload: Individuals with genetic disorders like hemochromatosis that cause excessive iron absorption.
  • Patients undergoing certain therapies: Those receiving blood transfusions may have elevated iron levels, affecting UIBC.
  • Patients with chronic diseases: Conditions like chronic kidney or liver disease can influence unsaturated iron binding capacity levels.

Interpreting results

Elevated UIBC may indicate an iron deficiency, often associated with iron deficiency anemia. Unsaturated iron binding capacity levels can also be elevated in inflammatory conditions, including infections or autoimmune diseases.

Decreased UIBC typically suggests iron overload, which can occur in conditions like hemochromatosis or in individuals receiving regular blood transfusions.

It is important to interpret test results alongside other iron metabolism tests and the patient’s clinical symptoms.
