Melatonin is a hormone that plays essential roles in various bodily functions. Whether you’re struggling with insomnia, facing immune system challenges, or simply want to gain deeper insights into your health, a test can provide valuable information. At IntroLab, we offer detailed analyses to help you better understand your body and health condition.

What is melatonin?

Melatonin, also known as N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, is a hormone produced by our pineal gland, commonly known as the epiphysis. This molecule is not only a product of the pineal gland – it is also produced in various parts of the body, including bone marrow cells, platelets, lymphocytes, skin, and the gastrointestinal tract.

Melatonin acts on a range of important functions in our body:

  • Helps regulate the length and quality of sleep
  • Synchronizes the circadian rhythm, our internal biological clock that follows a 24-hour cycle and regulates various physiological processes
  • Participates in the regulation of body temperature
  • Plays a key role in maintaining cardiovascular health
  • Enhances the functioning of the immune system
  • Acts as an antioxidant, neutralizing harmful free radicals in the body
  • Plays a vital role in controlling the release of hormones important for female reproduction

Why is measuring melatonin important?

The concentration of melatonin in the blood is usually very low but follows circadian variations. The highest concentrations of melatonin occur at night between 6:00 PM and 8:00 AM, peaking between midnight and 5:00 AM, after which they rapidly decline. Therefore, measuring melatonin levels can provide insights into various health aspects, including sleep, stress, immune response, and much more.

When is this test necessary?

Testing is most commonly recommended for individuals with sleep problems, particularly those suffering from insomnia. Additionally, this test can be used in the evaluation of certain health conditions related to altered immune system function, cardiovascular issues, changes in body temperature, or problems with reproductive hormones.

How is the test performed?

At our IntroLab, melatonin test is conducted using precise and specialized methods. To ensure the accuracy of the results, we typically analyze blood plasma, where the concentration of melatonin is up to ten times higher than in saliva. Although melatonin can also be detected in saliva, which is a non-invasive alternative, our laboratory focuses on blood analysis to provide the most accurate results.

How are the results interpreted?

Melatonin test results can indicate various health issues. For example, low levels may suggest sleep problems, exposure to electromagnetic radiation, or exposure to light. On the other hand, elevated levels may be present in cases of orthostatic hypotension, a condition in which blood pressure drops suddenly when a person quickly rises from a lying or sitting position.
