Blood insulin analysis is a laboratory test performed at IntroLab in Belgrade to measure blood insulin levels. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels and plays a key role in glucose metabolism.

This test is very helpful in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as hypoglycemia and insulin resistance. It is also used for the initial assessment of the insulin dose needed for patients with type 2 diabetes who are transitioning to insulin therapy.

Why is blood insulin analysis important?

Insulin is used to assess the pancreas’s ability to produce insulin, as well as to assist in diagnosing certain conditions such as insulinomas (insulin-producing tumors), hypoglycemia (low blood glucose levels), insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes therapy.

When a person has low blood glucose levels along with symptoms such as sweating, palpitations (“heart pounding”), dizziness, and fainting, measuring insulin levels is one of the key blood tests for diabetes.

Also, in people who already have diabetes, measuring insulin levels can help assess how well their pancreas can still produce insulin.

In some cases, determining insulin levels can also be used in people suspected of having insulin resistance, a condition in which the body does not efficiently use the insulin it produces, along with additional insulin resistance laboratory analyses.

Decreased insulin values

Decreased insulin values can occur in several health conditions, including type 1 diabetes mellitus, hypopituitarism, and certain pancreatic diseases such as chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, or after pancreatectomy.

Increased insulin values

Increased insulin values can occur in the following conditions:

Type II diabetes mellitus (early stage): In this case, the body develops insulin resistance, meaning that cells do not respond to insulin to properly regulate blood sugar levels. In response, the pancreas increases insulin production to compensate for the resistance, resulting in elevated insulin levels.
Insulin receptor mutations: Genetic changes in insulin receptors can lead to reduced functionality of these receptors. This makes it difficult for cells to properly use insulin, causing the body to compensate for this deficiency by increasing insulin production.
Cushing’s syndrome: This condition arises from prolonged exposure to high levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Cortisol can interfere with normal insulin function, resulting in elevated blood insulin levels.
Insulinoma: Insulinoma is a benign tumor that forms in the pancreas and produces large amounts of insulin. This leads to excessive secretion of insulin and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels). If this condition is suspected, in addition to measuring insulin levels, blood sugar analysis is likely also indicated.
Obesity/prediabetes: Obesity and prediabetes are conditions characterized by impaired glucose and insulin regulation in the body. Elevated insulin levels are often observed in individuals with obesity or prediabetes.
Fructose or galactose intolerance: Intolerance to certain types of sugars, such as fructose or galactose, can cause elevated insulin levels as the body’s response to these sugars.
Use of certain medications: Some types of medications, such as corticosteroids, levodopa, and oral contraceptives, can affect insulin levels in the body and lead to elevated values.

It is important to note that this description is only a summary of conditions where decreased or elevated insulin values may occur. For an accurate diagnosis and interpretation of insulin results, it is necessary to consult with a doctor, medical expert, or staff at the private laboratory Belgrade, IntroLab.
