The Inhibin A analysis is used to assess the functionality of the sex glands and the pituitary-gonadal axis. This analysis is particularly useful in the quadruple “Q” test for pregnancy assessment, as well as in screening for potential preeclampsia during pregnancy. The biochemical laboratory in Belgrade, IntroLab, offers the opportunity to perform this test through blood sampling.

What is Inhibin A?

Inhibin A is a member of the beta-transforming growth factors group that has hormonal activity in the blood and is near its site of origin. It is synthesized in the sex glands, such as the ovaries and testes, as well as in the placenta. Inhibin A plays a role in inhibiting the synthesis and release of FSH from the pituitary and GnRH from the hypothalamus, thereby regulating the hormonal coupling between the pituitary and sex glands. It consists of two subunits, α and β.

Why is Inhibin A analysis indicated?

Inhibin A analysis can be used for various purposes and indications depending on the specific clinical situation. Some common ones include:

Assessment of the functionality of the sex glands: Measuring levels of inhibin A can provide information about the function of the ovaries in women and the testes in men. This can be useful in diagnosing and monitoring reproductive disorders.
Assessment of reproductive function: Inhibin A analysis can be part of the evaluation of fertility and reproductive disorders in women and men.
Screening for preeclampsia: Elevated levels of inhibin A during pregnancy may indicate an increased risk of preeclampsia, a serious condition that can affect the health of both the mother and baby.

It is important to note that levels of inhibin A can vary depending on the stage of the menstrual cycle in women and the gestational age of the fetus in pregnant women. Additionally, biotin supplementation can affect the results of the test. Smokers often show elevated levels of inhibin A, while people with obesity often show decreased levels.
