HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, known as “good” cholesterol, plays a crucial role in heart protection. Its function is to remove excess bad cholesterol from the arteries and transport it back to the liver for further processing and elimination from the body. A high level of HDL cholesterol is considered a favorable factor for heart health, while a low level may indicate an increased risk of heart disease. Therefore, a blood cholesterol analysis provides important information about your cardiac risk and helps maintain heart health.

Indications for biochemical blood analysis of HDL cholesterol include the presence of:

  • Atherosclerosis
  • Ischemic heart disease
  • Liver diseases
  • Diabetes mellitus.

Interpretation of HDL cholesterol analysis results

Patients using certain medications can expect increased HDL cholesterol levels. Some of these medications include cyclophenyl, oral contraceptives, fibrinic acid derivatives (clofibrate, gemfibrozil), estrogens, simvastatin, lovastatin, nicotinic acid, pravastatin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, captopril, Furopidamine, and coenzyme Q10.

Certain drugs such as androgens, cyclosporine, beta-blockers (especially non-cardioselective), interferons, diuretics, thiazides, or interleukins may lead to decreased HDL cholesterol levels. Reduced HDL cholesterol results may also be due to other factors. This includes the presence of abetalipoproteinemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Additionally, early coronary artery disease, cholestasis, nephrotic syndrome, and chronic renal insufficiency may lead to deviations.

On the other hand, increased HDL cholesterol levels can occur for various reasons, including hyperalphalipoproteinemia, primary biliary cirrhosis, and chronic hepatitis.

What does sampling look like?

Like the rest of the blood lipid status tests, the analysis of HDL cholesterol involves drawing blood from a vein in the arm. Priprema: You should not eat anything for at least 8 hours (ideally 12 hours) before drawing blood. During this period, you should avoid consuming juices, tea, and coffee, although drinking water is allowed. It is also recommended to avoid excessive food consumption the day before the analysis. It is important to avoid physical and emotional stress, as well as smoking at least 60 minutes before giving blood.
