The CA 72-4 (stomach) analysis is a medical test that detects the level of the CA 72-4 antigen, a key marker for certain types of cancer, including gastric and pancreatic cancer. Although an elevated CA 72-4 level can be associated with various conditions, this test is crucial in identifying and monitoring the aforementioned malignancies. This test is an integral part of our offering of tumor marker tests at IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade, where we are committed to providing accurate and efficient results.

What is CA 72-4 (stomach)?

CA 72-4, or carcinoma antigen 72-4, is a tumor marker. It consists of a complex of proteins and carbohydrates, which are often increased in the bloodstream of individuals with certain types of malignant diseases. Although CA 72-4 can be found in small amounts in healthy individuals, significantly elevated levels of this marker may indicate the presence of some types of cancer. However, elevated CA 72-4 levels are not only found in malignant diseases. They can also be elevated in some benign diseases, such as liver, lung, and gastrointestinal tract diseases.

In cancer, CA 72-4 is most commonly used as a marker for gastric cancer, but it can also be used to monitor patients with pancreatic, ovarian, and other types of cancer.

Why is the CA 72-4 (stomach) analysis performed?

The CA 72-4 analysis is used to monitor patients with certain types of cancer. This marker can be useful for assessing the response to therapy, detecting recurrence, and determining the stage of the disease.

Symptoms that may occur in individuals with cancers typically monitored by the CA 72-4 marker include:

  • A feeling of fullness, even after a small meal
  • Stomach pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Skin rash or anemia

It is important to note that the CA 72-4 (stomach) test cannot diagnose cancer on its own. It is used as an additional method in combination with other diagnostic tests, such as biopsy and imaging, to determine the complete clinical picture.
